Capacitor values have changed slightly over the years due to changing manufacturing standards. In some cases, 5uF has been replaced with 4. Many 20uF and 25uF have been replaced with 22uF. On Ruby Gold capacitors in our standard kits, the polarity of the capacitor is indicated only by an arrow on the side of the capacitor which points toward the negative end. On Ruby Gold capacitors, both ends of the capacitor are “dimpled”, so you cannot determine polarity that way. Especially in the “silverface” years, the internal designs sometimes do not correspond with the schematic for the particular model version shown on the tube chart. It is recommended that the values of the filter capacitors inside the capacitor housing beneath the chassis be checked and verified before ordering a specific capacitor kit, to make sure that your amp was not one that did not adhere to the schematic. Always unplug the amplifier from commercial power, and discharge all filter capacitors before working on the amplifier circuitry. If you are unsure about this procedure, we strongly recommend that you leave your amplifier in the care of a professional service person. See the complete model cross reference.

Fender Tube amp codes: – look for a 2 letter code stamped on the tube chart inside the back of the amp – the first letter is the year, and the second letter is the month. An amp stamped NA would have been made in Jan. Here is a list of the first letter showing the year of manufacture. These codes have nothing to do with the serial number that is stamped on the right rear of the chassis – Those numbers are posted below.
These codes are for amps with the serial number beginning with a letter:. EIA numbers taken from the transformers may help you to determine the date of production on amps that fall between the different dating schemes.

Much of this is due to an unefficient phase inverter circuit design. In build quality and component selection brands of caps, resistors, pots the silverfaces are not as robust as the blackface models. Leo Fender began building guitar amplifiers before he started manufacturing electric guitars. They are all very rare today and few have survived. The first amplifiers made in-house by the Fender Electric Instrument Company have been dubbed the Woodie series, built in through They included the Model 26 Deluxe , the Princeton , and the Professional. Fender amplifiers became established with the tweed series, wood cases covered in varnished cotton twill in the manner of suitcases of the era.
The nickname is a misnomer, as tweed is a coarse woollen fabric, often woven in a twill pattern. They were produced for more than a decade. The first cloth used was an off-white fabric, followed by a horizontal-stripe two-tone pattern, and finally a two-tone twill. The twill covering was first used in on the Dual Professional, a twin 10″ 6L6 -powered model of which only were made before being renamed “the Super Amp” in These early models are referred to as “TV-Fronts” due to the shape of the cabinet when viewed from above.

All of these guitars’ ID numbers do not follow the unique number sequence of the regular production guitars. Throughout the early s, Squier staples such as the Affinity and Standard series continued with few changes other than occasional color additions, although a new twin-pivot bridge with dating anodized saddles was added to the Standard Series once again mirroring Fender in design evolution. The table below shows the Fender serial numbers as they were used from to Some of the early Affinities only used the dating number of the year.
The Squier lineup was augmented in with Affinity series guitars and basses. The new neck plate only had the Fender F logo stamped in place. Non-traditional Squier Vista Series instruments were also introduced in this period. Some late 80’s and early 90’s examples held a serial number with the prefix M followed by 7 numerals, although there is much that is not known about these guitars and their exact date of manufacture as Squier were undergoing a ‘transitional’ period at this time making precise dating difficult.

However, the first drip-edge models appeared in late August of as the black-face cosmetics were being replaced by silver-faced amps. The most popular amps, like the Deluxe Reverb, were the first to receive the new look, which included not only the silver face-plate and aluminum drip-edge, but also a slightly different grill cloth with added subtle vertical blue stripes. A few models during this early silverface period actually have the new silver face-plate and the old blackface style back-plate, and the earliest silver faceplates have the mysterious slim black vertical lines more on this later.
It makes sense that the amps that were not selling as well were the last to receive the new look, as they were the models for which the old black-face parts lasted the longest, and inversely the most popular models were the first to get the update, as their black-face parts ran out the earliest. What does this mean? It means that you may see a drip-edge Deluxe Reverb with a build date as early as mid, and a black-face non-reverb bandmaster or Vibrolux as late as February of Now, as for when the drip-edge was eliminated.
Once again, the most popular models were the first to lose the aluminum trim in mid and the least popular were the last to lose it in late , with the Bandmaster Reverb TFLD as the very last. By January of all fender amps being produced were the more common non-drip edge silverface models, those cosmetics continued on unchanged through the entire decade.
Got it? There is no clear consensus as to why these lines exist; they appear just before the Volume controls and on either side of the amps name. They are non-symmetrical both vertically as well as horizontally and are extremely thin compared to all other lines.

Vintage amps don’t have “Master” only “Volume” controls. This means amps have different sweet spots, remaining clean at different volumes and breaking up earlier or later, so its with this in mind that we’ve separated them in three categories:.

If you have not been trained to work with high voltage then have an amp technician service your amp. See more tube amplifier safety info here. The “” in the model name comes from the circuit change date of The silverface amps are surprisingly similar to the coveted Fender blackface line of amps so many blackface mods and tweaks apply to the silverface lineup.
It’s pretty easy to “blackface” these amps for a full generational regression. I usually prefer switchable mods that allow me to go back to the amp’s original circuit and tone. The often unused Normal channel is also a great place to mod away with to make that channel interesting and usable. Fender made the head cab extra large to allow for distance between the power transformer and the reverb tank.
Cut the NFB in half and add some color and texture. I love this thing. Mod one of them.
